Svenåke Boström, Sweden
is Media development manager at Sundsvalls Tidning, a local newspaper in the middle of Sweden. Often faster than traditional media and they observe closely what we are doing, always ready to comment and correct us.
At Oulu24
Svenåke will tell us, how to prepare for design in much smaller format than tabloid. He also would like to see some ground breaking changes in newspaper design. Not only some polish on the nice typographic surface. And he would like to go to Pikisaari.

New narrative techniques and tools:
Javier Errea, Spain
is the head of Errea Communication, a news design studio based in Pamplona since 2006. He says, that he is basicly a journalist and a 40 years old guy still feeling like 20. These two aspects are crucial to understand the way he approaches news design. He never studied design nor Fine Arts at the school, but just learnt to deal with pages when writing and editing his stories. He strongly believe in journalism. After working for different newspapers as reporter, editor, and AME, he is now based in Pamplona, Spain, and runs his own communication & design office. Simultaneously he is the current president of SNDE and coordinator of the Malofiej Infographics Awards, and teacher at the University of Navarra.
He has designed or redesigned around 40 dailies and magazines in Europe, America and Asia in the past decade. He was the consultant on the redesign of Portuguese Expresso, awarded a World’s Best Designed by SND in 2008.
At Oulu24
Javier would like to focus on new narrative techniques and tools as a way to better face our current crises in the new industry. Brave heart, courage, and huge self-esteem are among his unique medicines. He is showing how he has tried to implement these techniques in different situations, and countries.
He would like to talk about journalism with colleagues in Oulu. He would like to share thoughts and concerns from a strict journalistic point of view. And enjoy the Scandinavian far north. This is Javier’s first time so north!

Integration through news management:
Frank Gander, Norway
is working as online Editor in the Aftenposten Mediahouse, Norway.
He has studied mass media, criminology, journalism and investigating journalism at different colleges and universities in Norway. He also has participated in several news management-programs.
Frank started as a freelance-reporter in his local newspaper, only 15 years old. He has worked fulltime as a reporter and editor in different media-organizations since 1993, both local, regional and national newspapers all over Norway.
In 2005 he left the position as an Assistant News Editor in Verdens Gang, the largest newspaper in Norway, and went online as a Managing News Editor at Aftenposten.no.
In November 2008 Frank became an Online Editor with a strategic and editorial responsibility for all digital activities.
In the Aftenposten Media House, Frank has a key-role in shaping the news-organization on both platforms, and has been a part of the group that planned and implemented a more integrated newsroom.
Frank lives in Oslo, has written one documentary-book, has one daughter and is soon to be married.
At Oulu24
Frank's topic will be Integration and newsroom-management. For Aftenposten the solution is not a fully integrated or a totally separated newsroom.
Frank says, that there are two important things in media world just now: how the financial crises throughout the world affects and changes the media-organizations and the quality of journalism, and how we can utilize digital tools to gather information, communicate with our users and improve our digital storytelling.
At the seminar Frank hopes to find three great ideas that he can use in his own news organization.
And finally, Oulu is totally new part of Finland to Frank.
A Kick in the Pants:
Martin Gee, USA
is currently art director of Oregon Business Magazine and responsible for all of the visual content that includes design, illustrations, information graphics, photography and marketing collateral.
He thinks that the most interesting thing in media world is the challenge the American newspaper industry is facing. It will be interesting to see who falls and rises. He is curious to know what the industry is like in Finland and other countries
At Oulu24
Martin's presentation is about finding inspiration and ideas everywhere, the creative process, brainstorming and how to keep creativity in our lives as artists and designers.
He says that in the seminar it is excited to learn from and meet all the international speakers with their different perspectives. It would not be possible without this wonderful opportunity. He has also never travelled overseas before. Oulu will be his first!
Internet newspapers, case Uusi Suomi:
Markku Huusko, Finland
is editor in chief of internet newspaper Uusi Suomi. He says, that fine things are going on in the sites of yellow papers, but all the newsprints are losing readers. Serious journalism is hard business in the net. But when you are able to take the users to create content with you, the story can be different. In Oulu he hopes to hear different views on internet media when it comes to making money.
At Oulu24
Markku will speak about internet newspapers, case Uusi Suomi. The structure of media is changing rapidly. Newsprint is losing ground, magazines are doing pretty fine, especially if they have added a good net service. Television is not that strong anymore.
In Oulu he hopes also to see and hear views on internet media when it comes to making money.

Do’s and Don’ts of news site usability:
Matthias Kretschmer, Germany
is the owner of Xalmiento web-services. They are specialized in the analysis, conceptualization and design of news sites and classifieds sites. Both Matthias and the design team take a strongly conceptual approach to website design trying to base their advice on deep knowledge on how users interact with a website and its content.
Since founding the company in 2006 they have been helping close to 20 customers such as Kieler Nachrichten (kn-online.de) and the Daily Telegraph in improving or designing their site.
At Oulu24
Matthias’ topic is Do’s and Don’ts of News site Usability. He believes that online news design can and should be inspired by print news design. From a German perspective many Scandinavian papers seem to be more pro-active in exploring the online news territory. Therefore Matthias assumes they have very good chances of successfully keeping and growing their combined audience in print and online.
Having lived and worked in Finland for about two years Matthias is simply looking forward to be back in this friendly country for a few days enjoying whatever Oulu has to offer.

News design/graphic design and fine art/paintings side by side:
Lars Pryds, Denmark
was trained as a graphic designer and illustrator in the School of Arts and Crafts in Kolding, Denmark, in the mid-eighties. Today, he works as chief sub-editor for visuals at the Danish free newspaper 24timer (24.dk). Beside that, he works from his own studio (pryds.com) with graphic design, type design, book publishing – and fine art in the form of paintings and works on paper which he has exhibited in art galleries and museums, in Denmark and abroad.
At Oulu24
Lars will present the different parts of his work – news design/graphic design on one side, fine art/paintings on the other, and show how they can exist side by side, and where they either collide or blend in with one another. He thinks it is important to not just focus on one thing, this will also be part of his presentation, which will be very visual, based on lots and lots of pictures showing examples of his work during the last twenty years or so.
In Oulu he hopes to see speakers who are optimistic about their media and serious about their products – seen from a design/journalistic viewpoint, rather than trying to create products that try to please the readers. He is sick and tired o |
